THE URANTIA BOOK: A COSMIC PERSPECTIVE

Something Else Is Emerging

But there is something more important here than finding another seven. Papers 1–5 showed us a Source extending outward while creatures progress inward toward that Source. Papers 6–9 now show us what happens inside the Source relationship itself. Unity differentiates. Differentiation produces relationship. Relationship produces new function. New function becomes distributed outward. And distributed function becomes increasingly specialized as it enters larger and more complex structures.

Look at that progression: Unity ↓ Differentiation ↓ Relationship ↓ Emergent Function ↓ Distribution ↓ Specialization That should sound familiar.

Because now we are moving beyond Law One. Law One gave us the condition necessary for relationship: Unity → Separation → Primordial Tension But Papers 6–9 begin showing us what can happen after relationship exists. Relationship can produce something that neither differentiated component represents alone. Father is not Son. Son is not Father. And the Infinite Spirit is described as emerging from the conjoint relationship of Father and Son. Two differentiated identities enter relationship, and from their relationship a new functional identity emerges.

That is something we need to mark. Because one of the central principles of the Twelve Harmonic Laws is that relationships do not merely connect existing things. Relationships can create new things. And now The Urantia Book has placed that principle directly at the center of its conception of Deity.

Our Map So Far

After Papers 1–9, the central architecture has expanded considerably. We began with: THE ONE — FIRST SOURCE AND CENTER Then: SOURCE + EXPRESSION Then: SOURCE + EXPRESSION → CONJOINT ACTION Then: ACTION → SEVENFOLD DIFFERENTIATION Then: SEVENFOLD FUNCTION → SEVEN SUPERUNIVERSES

So the system is moving from: Unity toward differentiation while simultaneously preserving: Differentiation within Unity. That is becoming one of the strongest recurring structural themes we've encountered so far. And once again, we're still near the beginning of the book.

The Foreword gave us the blueprint. Papers 1–5 established the Source. Papers 6–9 have now begun showing us how that Source becomes relational, functional, and active.

And that gives us our next question. If Paradise Deity has now become a threefold functional relationship, what happens when those relationships begin combining? Because that is where The Urantia Book goes next.

Before moving forward, there are three words we need to examine more closely. Life. Personality. Mind. These words are not unique to The Urantia Book. Humanity has been talking about them in one form or another for thousands of years. God gives life. The Word expresses what is within God. Spirit moves through creation. Human beings possess a soul. We think. We remember. We develop personalities. We experience the world and somehow carry those experiences forward with us. The language changes between religions, cultures and periods of history, but these basic ideas continue to appear.

The Urantia Book takes these familiar concepts and gives them a much more elaborate structure. The Universal Father is presented as the First Source and Center. The Eternal Son is associated with personality and the perfect expression of the Father. The Infinite Spirit is associated with mind, action and the distribution of mind throughout creation.

In the previous section, we looked at this structurally as: SOURCE → EXPRESSION → ACTION And we saw something important happening. Instead of presenting God as one undifferentiated entity performing every function in the same way, The Urantia Book distributes functions among three distinguishable Sources and Centers while continuing to describe them as one unified Deity relationship.

But what does that actually mean? This is where being a programmer changed the way I looked at these words.

Looking at God Like a System

I have spent most of my life building software. When programmers are given a complicated system, we eventually have to move beyond what the components are called. We need to know what they do.

What does this component receive? What does it produce? What information moves through it? What gets processed? What gets stored? What retrieves the stored information? What communicates with the outside world? And how do all of these separate functions work together as one system?

So let's apply that same way of thinking here. Suppose we take The Urantia Book's description seriously as a proposed system. God exists. Paradise exists. The Father, Son and Spirit perform the functions the book assigns to them. Life, personality and mind are real components of that system. What would that system actually be doing?

That question led me somewhere I did not expect. Because while developing Codex from a completely different direction, I had been working on essentially the same problem at a smaller scale: What does a continuing intelligent life actually need in order to function? And that problem eventually brought me back to the same three words. Life. Personality. Mind.

Life

Start with life. What is the most basic difference between a static structure and a living process? Movement. Not simply movement through physical space. Movement from one state to another. A living thing exists now. Something happens. Its condition changes. It experiences another moment. Its condition changes again. It develops. That means life requires continuity through time.

As a programmer, I can build an enormous software system containing code, databases, memory structures and processing capabilities. But if nothing is running, none of those things are actively doing anything. The architecture exists. The potential exists. But the process is not moving.

In Codex, this became an important distinction. Life requires a running process. There has to be a continuing movement from: STATE → EXPERIENCE → NEW STATE → EXPERIENCE → NEW STATE That is why Codex Time and the heartbeat became necessary when we began thinking about continuing intelligence. The system has to keep moving.

Now return to The Urantia Book. The Father is the First Source and Center, and life proceeds from that Source. That gives us our first functional component. Life provides the continuing existence and movement of the living identity. If I were explaining this to another programmer, I might call it the runtime. Not because God is computer software. Because the analogy helps us understand the function. Something has to keep the system alive and moving through successive states.

Mind

But being alive isn't enough to produce experience. A living identity needs some way to encounter reality. Something has to come in. In programming, this is input. A program might receive information from a keyboard, camera, microphone, sensor, network request or another process. Whatever the source, the basic relationship is the same: Outside information becomes available inside the system.

Living beings do this constantly. We see. We hear. We touch. We encounter other people. We observe events. We experience our environment. But receiving a signal isn't enough. That information has to become meaningful to the living identity. This is where mind enters the architecture. Mind gives the living identity the ability to take reality in and make it available for interpretation.

And this is where we found an important distinction while developing Codex: Mind is not consciousness. Mind allows for consciousness. Consciousness is the process that occurs as the living identity interacts with the incoming information. From a programmer's perspective, Mind begins to resemble the input interface.

And suddenly the Urantia description of the Infinite Spirit becomes considerably more interesting. The Spirit is not merely called the Third Source and Center. The Spirit is repeatedly associated with mind, mind ministry, coordination and the mechanisms through which the universe becomes operative. So now we have: LIFE → continuing operation and MIND → intake and interpretation But what happens to the information after it enters?
